After the Last Kayak Day, Kent Narrows Runs on Oysters and Ducks

October 22, 2026

Sunday, November 1, is the last kayak day of 2026 at the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center in Grasonville. From the dock at the 510-acre preserve, paddlers head out onto Marshy Creek and the Bay. The center's own page lists the wildlife people come for: ospreys, eagles, river otters, terrapins and all kinds of waterfowl. After November 1 the boats go into storage. The preserve stays open, and so does most of the water around it.

That's the pattern across Kent Narrows this time of year. The open-air dock bars shut down. The year-round seafood kitchens shift their menus to oysters. Ducks and swans arrive in the coves the boats have left. And the December calendar ends up busier than November's. For anyone in Prospect Bay, winter here starts on a schedule, and the schedule is worth knowing.

The Weekend the Decks Go Quiet

Some of the outdoor places have already closed. The homepage for Red Eye's Dock Bar now shows a "Closed For the Season" banner. It doesn't give a last day or a reopening date. The Kent Narrows Development Foundation's dining page lists Big Owl and Fisherman's Crab Deck as seasonal venues, open April through October. A Star Democrat profile of Fisherman's Inn says the Crab Deck has usually opened in April and closed for the winter after its yearly Halloween party. Going by that pattern, it would close around the Halloween weekend of October 31 and November 1. The 2026 date hasn't been posted, so call ahead.

Big Owl is the one that's hard to read. Its own homepage says the tiki bar is open five days a week and points visitors to its schedule. That doesn't match the April-through-October listing. Check the schedule on its site before you drive over.

CBEC has its own cutoff. Its FAQ says the property stays open all year, but the Visitor Center is open only from mid-April through mid-November. The preserve's homepage lists hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, weather permitting. It closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. So the trails stay open after the building closes, which matters for the birding season that starts as the boats leave.

Why the Winter Menu Leans on Oysters

Kent Narrows' own winter guide explains the menu change in a single line. An oyster packing facility sits on the waterfront, so "oyster dishes are number one in these parts." The restaurants that stay open through the cold months are serving what comes off the boats that still work the Narrows. The same guide says that on most winter days you'll still see workboats passing through.

Harris Crab House says it's open year-round and serves oysters year-round. Its weekday happy hour runs from 4 p.m. to close. It does buck-a-shuck oysters on Thursdays and has live music on Thursdays and Fridays. The winter guide says Harris adds oyster buffets and nightly specials, keeps hard crabs on through the winter, and that its Friday night buffet is especially popular with locals.

At Fisherman's Inn, the oyster stew and crab soup come with a bit of local history. The dining room holds Miss Betty's collection of oyster plates, and an elevated model train runs through the room. The restaurant says it serves lunch and dinner seven days a week. That train comes up again in December.

Here's where each of the year-round kitchens stands as of late October, based on each restaurant's own posted information:

Venue Posted schedule Winter detail worth knowing
Harris Crab House Open year-round Thursday buck-a-shuck, Friday night buffet
Fisherman's Inn Lunch and dinner, seven days Oyster stew, Miss Betty's oyster plates, dining-room train
Dock House Year-round; Mon–Fri 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Sat–Sun 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Patio is enclosed and heated in winter
Bridges Daily; Sun–Thu 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Oyster and crab dishes
The Narrows Opens daily at 11 a.m. Chunky cream of crab soup, Sunday brunch
The Jetty Opens 11 a.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday Weekend breakfast and brunch

For a morning stop, the winter guide points to Dessert First, next to Harris Crab House, and Sugar Doodles Sweet Shop on the west side of the Narrows in the Boatel Complex. The Boatel Complex, across from Dock House, also has Hope Boutique and two shops the guide lists as new: Kent Island Gifts and Kent Island Jewelry at 100 Piney Narrows Road. Closer to home, the guide sends art and antiques shoppers to Anchors and Oars on Route 18, Main Street in Grasonville, across from Queenstown Bank.

The Water Fills Back Up With Birds

The kayaks come off the water just as the wintering waterfowl start to arrive. The Kent Narrows winter guide lists diving ducks, including scaup, buffleheads and mergansers, as plentiful. It adds dabbling ducks, white tundra swans gathering with black ducks and mallards in the rivers and coves, and Canada geese and bald eagles overhead and in the fields. On the Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway, it notes fields filled with snow geese.

The guide names these viewing spots, most of them along the Cross Island Trail:

  • Ferry Point Park, which overlooks Kent Narrows and the Chester River and which the guide describes as "full of a variety of waterfowl"
  • Wells Cove Public Landing, reached from the Cross Island Trail
  • The cove beside the Holiday Inn Express Annapolis-Kent Island
  • The observation towers at the Chesapeake Heritage and Visitors Center, with views of Kent Narrows, the Chester River and Eastern Bay
  • CBEC in Grasonville, which runs guided Saturday-morning bird hikes

The Heritage and Visitors Center is also home to the Chesapeake Legacy Museum. Its exhibits cover life on the water and the building of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. On a gray day after a cold walk, that's a good place to warm up.

The Calendar Gets Busier in December

With the decks closed, November is quiet. Then things pick up again in December. These are the dates as they stand now:

  1. Sunday, November 1: last day of kayak rentals at CBEC.
  2. Thursday, November 5: "Tree Talk: The Social Network" at CBEC. It's also a Thursday, so Harris has buck-a-shuck that night.
  3. Saturday, November 14, 10 a.m.: CBEC bird hike.
  4. First two weekends of December: the Queen Anne's County Railroad Society's 2026 Festival of Trains at the Kent Narrows Outlet Center, known locally as the Old Outlets, at 61 Piney Narrows Road, Chester. It fills 10,000 square feet with train displays in scales from G to Z, admission is free, and the guide says the event has been a family tradition for more than 25 years. On this year's calendar, the first two weekends are December 5–6 and 12–13. Confirm the dates at 410-490-3510 before you go.
  5. First Saturday in December, by tradition: the tree lighting for the Watermen's Crab Basket Trees, with a holiday vendor fair and visits with Santa. The trees go up on the Fisherman's Crab Deck property and around the Watermen's Monument at Route 18, Main Street, and Kent Narrows Way South, and stay up until mid-January. The event page hasn't posted a 2026 date yet. If the tradition holds, the lighting would be Saturday, December 5.
  6. Saturday, December 12, 10 a.m.: CBEC bird hike.

December 12 is the one to circle. It falls on the second train weekend, and a single loop covers it all. Do the CBEC bird hike in the morning, walk through the Festival of Trains on Piney Narrows Road, have lunch under the train at Fisherman's Inn, and finish at the basket trees at the Watermen's Monument. The winter guide suggests pairing the festival with the basket trees and the Fisherman's Inn train.

Coming Home From the Western Shore After Dark

Nights out in Annapolis come with a catch this winter. The Maryland Transportation Authority's Eastbound Bay Bridge Deck Replacement Project began major construction in late fall 2023 and is expected to finish in spring 2027. Barrier wall replacement on the suspension span is scheduled to run through winter 2027. Until then, the eastbound span closes at night and traffic runs both ways on the westbound span.

The hours change from week to week. MDTA's advisory for October 18–24, 2026 allowed eastbound closures from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Wednesday, 9 p.m. on Thursday, 11 p.m. on Friday and 9 p.m. on Saturday, and warned that times can shift with traffic and weather. Before heading home late, check MDTA's weekly advisory or the live conditions at baybridge.maryland.gov. The real-time line is 1-877-229-7726.

Kent Narrows changes with the seasons, and so does what buyers notice in the homes around it. A Prospect Bay house with a view of winter swans is shown differently than one listed in July.
